I'll bet you thought you heard the last of cactus porn. But Danna and Susan spurred an old memory for me. They both wrote about clown cactus containers. Susan's grandmother had one and Danna's grandmother saw one at a store and laughed at it until tears ran down her eyes. I vaguely remember our next door neighbor having one when I was quite small. She had a house full of kitschy type stuff. So never one to leave things alone, I had to google "clown cactus containers" and I was able to find a photo. Now wouldn't one of these go great in your home?
This kind of stuff was very popular back in the early 60's. Do you remember any kitsch that your parents or grandparents had? Kitsch is defined as something that appeals to popular or lowbrow taste and is often of poor quality. Having a Chia Pet is a good example of current kitsch. Not to be confused with eating chia seeds which apparently is a cutting edge superfood! So I found a photo of something very kitschy that my parents had. They were always misplacing their eyeglasses so had this little gem.
If we were still doing homework, this would be your assignment! HERE's a website devoted to kitsch.

Yes those clowns were a real funny. Later the cactus dies and she used it to put her dish sponge. My grandmother also had a coffee cup that was a woman's bussoms. I think they got them in TJ. I am glad she had a sense of humor. Lava lamps come to my mind. I think you should have a weekly meme. I never even heard of that word Kitsch until you brought it up.
ReplyDeleteoh God, that is so funny. Gross but funny!
ReplyDeleteI don't really have much in the way of kitsch, apart from pink microwave, little things like that! I couldn't possibly have a clown with a big cactus like that, can you imagine how I'd explain it to The Girl? She'd be mentally scarred for life!

Hi Darylynn,
ReplyDeleteVery funny! I don't remember my parents having anything kitsch really? My Dad was a furniture refinisher and very much into decor but I do remember my Mom had an expression "early Akron" do you remember the Akron stores? They were kind of like a Pier One they had small furniture items and bedding etc. There was one still here when I first moved into Burbank on Hollywood Way. I decorated my little triplex here in Burbank with Paul's Dad with some stuff from Akron. Hugs, Dru
Those are the ones! They were on the shelf just like that... two or three shelves of them. In Broadway, which was a very nice prestigious store. She would take me there to get my hair trimmed in the "Kids Salon". Like I said, I was amazed that she was laughing so hard at something like that but I was glad too because she liked to see the humor in things. Thanks for bring the memory back. HUGS
ReplyDeleteLOL!! I remember many of those "kitschy" type funny containers. There were many gadget type store in NYC along Broadway and Times Square with shelves filled with junk like that. Most of the real adult stuff was in the back of the stores. Today they probably would feature them in the front windows. Thanks for the giggles. Hugs
ReplyDeleteI remember the spectacle holders. They sold them on the boardwalk in some of the souvenir shops years ago.
ReplyDeleteTrends come and go.
Hope Thursday is treating you well.
Hugs
