Cock-a-Doodle-Don't!

Have I mentioned that our neighbors have recently decided to raise chickens?  Agoura, where we live, has a history of being horse property but we are in the more residential area called Agoura Hills.  The more rural area is known as Old Agoura.  Well, apparently our neighbors think they live in Old Agoura because they have a coop under their balcony.  Every morning around 4:30 AM, we are treated to an alarm clock that crows, "Cock-a- Doodle-Do" about every 15 seconds.  It seriously echoes through our little valley below.  Fortunately, our double-paned windows seals out the sound but if we choose to sleep with windows open, we are awakened at the crack of dawn.  Naturally, I have video (and audio so turn up your speaker) evidence...

I really don't mind it very much but I'm wondering if other neighbors are just as tolerant?  I hope Mr. Rooster  isn't a victim of "fowl" play!  Actually, I think it's a little inconsiderate to subject an entire neighborhood to a rooster crowing just so YOU can have eggs in the morning.  These people also have 2 German Shepherds that attacked our neighbor's little dog, Jack.  He had to go to the vets for stitches and the family never offered to pay the vet bill.  In the video, you can see our June Gloom weather.  It usually clears up by around 10 AM.  Will write about our Father's Day weekend later.

  1. Now that would drive me crazy!! Your neighborhood is really lovely. I live in the country and thank goodness no one has a rooster close enough to listen to that. As for her dogs attacking a little dog, I hope your neighbor at least sued them for the vet's bill. I'm looking forward to reading about your weekend. Hugs

  2. oh dear! That'S a bit loud.

Hope your neighbours look after their chickens properly, I mean, if they've got a dog that attacks other dogs, then the chances are it'll go after the chickens at some point too. And that will not be pretty.

  3. Hi Darylynn,
I am with Toni that would drive me crazy to hear a rooster at 4:30 AM! Even Paul where they lived didn't have that problem. I heard horses and cows occasionally but that was it. Hope you have a wonderful Monday. Hugs, Dru

  4. Hi, I wonder if your neighbors realize that they don't need a rooster to get eggs, only if they want babies. Apparently urban chickens are becoming popular nationwide. Some cities have restrictions / zoning rules. My local newspaper had an article about this topic just last week. http://www.indystar.com/article/20120616/LIVING02/206160305/Chickens-come-home-roost-Indy-s-urban-farms?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|IndyStar.com|s

  5. Are they allowed Roosters? Most HOA's that allow fowl say chickens only, no roosters. And yes, what Susan says, do they realize they don't need him if they just want eggs?
I want chickens when we move to Denver :)

  6. I am not very tolerate of people right now. Especially those who impose their wants on others. I am surprised at them for not helping with the little dog's vet bills.

Someone will have chicken dinner soon probably. HUGS

  7. Hi Darylynn I have bad neighbors that are inconsiderate as well. I guess everyone does. We used to live next door to people that had the roosters and chickens and after a few months we did call the city because it was hard to be awoken that early in the morning when we had to get up for work at 6am! we were awake at like you said 4:30 to 5am each day. Very frustrating to say the least.
Our neighbors that annoy us right now have a boat, RV, 2 SUV's, a Truck, and a work vehicle, 3 kids that run throughout the neighborhood unsupervised annoying everyone as they do as they please even keeping cars from driving down the street while they stand in the street with their hands on their hips. They have not tired that with me yet. They park their ugly work vehicle in front of our house and boat. We finally once again called the city after 3 months. The man got angry at me and shook his hand in my face and said I am going to park my work vehicle in front of your house everyday so you better get used to it. LOL! I said we will see about that. So we had a good neighbor park his pretty truck i front of the house for three weeks now it was for sale and Steve sold it for them, so now I guess I get to see if my neighbor will park his work vehicle in the street in front of my house. We do have CC and R's but he is a renter and thinks there is not any. Plus the city has the word slips my mind that you can be fined for having RV's and Boats parked in front of your home, but this guy thinks he is special I guess.
He told someone up the street he was thinking of moving back to southern CA I said yes!!!
    Have a great day! hugs

  8. LOL, poor you! :) I would not mind, I grow up with many neighbors (my grandparents too) having chickens and roosters that used to Cock-a- Doodle-Do day and night. :) I was used to it, I guess. Happy evening! :D

  9. Ohhhhh Nooooo! Not good! They don't need a rooster to have fresh eggs every morning. All they need are hens. Tell them to ditch the roo and bring a little peace back to the valley.

  10. My neighbor had a bunch of chickens too though they all suddenly disappeared. One rooster would crow all hours of the night into the wee hours but it didn't bother me. I like nature sounds. Even dogs barking.
    Hugs
