I Wet

"I wet, I cold, I scared."  That's how Jacob spent his first day of summer yesterday.  Jeff and I were working in the backyard trimming bushes around the patio and spa and Ryan and Jacob were helping put the clippings in the trash cans.  Jacob got too close to the edge of the spa and fell in.  We were right next to him and his head never went under and he was able to get to the step.  He had on long jeans and a t-shirt and was soaking wet.  The first thing he announced was, "I wet."  I helped him out and then he said, "I cold."  I started pulling his wet clothes off and then he told me, "I scared."  Poor little sweetie!  He never cried and Jeff and I said that even though he was slightly traumatized, maybe it was a good thing to have happen while we were standing right there because now he'll be extra cautious around the spa.  We never would let the boys be out there without us and I even worry about the cats around the spa.  We had a squirrel fall in and drown about a week ago and that got me to wondering about what would happen if one of our cats fell in.  Last week, I googled "cats drowning in pools and spas" and it does happen.  Jeff and I discussed the idea of putting a cat in the spa one by one and showing them where the step is so they will know how to get out.  They will be madder than wet hens but at least we'll have peace of mind knowing they can get out on their own.  What do you think?  Too traumatic for the cats?

  1. Poor Jacob! I am glad that you guys were right there with him. As for the cats - they make a product called Skamper Ramp and it helps animals get out of pools and spas (you can tell I worked for a pool supply company for 6 years lol). You might want to look into it.

I have seriously been MIA lately - I have a lot going on and hopefully within the next week things will slow down.

    Have a great day!

  2. too traumatic. I wouldn't worry too much about the cats simply because you don't let them go out and stay out by themselves. You're always there aren't you? If you suddenly decide to give them a dip in the spa they might be a tad miffed about it!
The drowning must be only if there is no way of clawing out of it, looking at yours, I can see a cat in panic would manage to claw out of it reasonably easily.

Years ago Dudley was hurtling around the house and ended up in the kitchen sink full of warm bubbly water. That taught me to make sure that I must not leave water in the bowl if I've finished with it. I think it's more about us learning the lesson, rather than cats.

Poor Jacob. Must have been quite a shock for him. Glad he was ok.

  3. Hi Darylynn,
Poor Jacob once Paul fell off the pier while we were waiting to get in a sailboat but he was much older than Jacob and swam like a fish at a really young age he jumped up and out so fast I didn't have time to panic. I wouldn't put the cats through that torture either I agree with Jules and Sadie. They really aren't outdoor cats anyway ya know? Oreo was an outdoor cat when the kids lived in Murrieta and he never had a mishap near their big pool. He had very little interest in it anyway. Hope you have a great Thursday. Hugs, Dru

  4. I am surprised that a cat would even drown in a spa (maybe a pool). Their whole everything would be to survive and get out of the water! I picture a cat spreading eagle to not touch water. However, I think it wouldn't be at all a bad idea to have a little lesson for the cats in regards to learning what to do if that should happen. Just like teaching children regarding fire drills etc. They may not like it but dying would be worse. HUGS

  6. Glad it all worked out okay.
Maybe you can leave a sort of step of some kind in the spa when you aren't using it. I have rocks on the pond and shelves for animals to climb out if they get in.

  7. Got your comment about the waitlist... sorry it hit a sore spot. I don't always agree with the systems in play. My complaint was the student being rude thinking it was the right choice to get help. I am there to help students but in this case there may not be anything I can do, so I did feel for him there. But that feeling of sympathy soon left me when he began to blame me. I did get him more people to talk to, unfortunately they probably told him the same thing. I am sorry that Justin's GPA was harmed by the waitlist. I keep warning students to beware of two things... the waitlist and the new HireOne card. (that is going to give us problems too... they are already being sued by students all over the country). Have a good evening... and thanks for letting me vent even though it brought back a bad memory.

  8. So, Mommy is planning group swim lessons with her baby mama friends for the boys. Can't wait! But, 1) how do attend to both of them at once? and 2) Jacob, even before this event...not so into water. How am I going to get him into this? He's never been in a real pool. I feel, for the ease of his mind, I shouldn't include him, but he NEEDS to learn pool safety.
