Chow

Food is always a big part of our travels.  I've always prided myself on finding the unique, local hot spots but it is so much easier now than it used to be thanks to google and all the trip advisor sites.  I used to have to ask around or look for reviews in local papers or magazines.  One of our oldest favorites in Carmel is the Rio Grill.  We've been going there since it first opened and the "kids" were using the box of crayons they gave them to draw on their paper tablecloths.  I usually don't order chicken in restaurants other than in salads but they have a smoked chicken dish that I just love so I always order that.  Here's the description:  House-smoked half chicken with mild-smoked chile butter, baby artichokes and red potatoes.  It's delicious!  Jeff always orders something new and this time had Grilled Prawns on penne pasta with a leek, pea and bacon creole cream.

We always take whoever is home at Cousin Steve's house in Carmel Valley out to dinner as a thank you for their hospitality and this time it was Janie and their son Matthew who were home over the weekend.  We went to a charming restaurant in Carmel Valley called The Corkscrew Cafe.  When you first walk in the door, this is what you see... a big brick oven with loaves and loaves of fresh bread.  This is the restaurant I mentioned that made me feel like I was dining in the Italian or French countryside.  We sat on the patio next to a large koi pond and there was an arbor over our heads with grapevines bearing bunches of red and green grapes.  We each ordered a glass of wine and they came with a carafe for each of us!  Nicer than the usual half-filled glass!  I had a salad with chicken, Janie and Matthew had salmon salads and Jeff had the roasted cherry tomato pizza with fresh mozzarella, basil olive oil, goat cheese, black olive and tomato sauce.  They get many of their ingredients from their own garden.

It's tradition that we also eat at Roy's at The Inn at Spanish Bay.  It's on the 17 Mile Drive so we always take advantage of that beautiful drive which has an admission fee because the restaurant will reimburse you for the fee.  However, the entire 17 Mile Drive was closed to the public because of the Concours d'Elegance but they had our name at the gate thanks to our dinner reservation so we were admitted.  We could've just stayed inside the gates because we were already there because we had tickets to the Concours but we wanted to go have drinks and watch the sunset at another place we enjoy:  Mission Ranch Hotel and Restaurant.  This is Clint Eastwood's resort and there's an outside patio at the restaurant where you can see all of Point Lobos, the ocean and a lovely meadow with sheep.

  1. Hi Darylynn,
    The restaurants sound wonderful! I am with you about chicken some many places don't cook chicken to my liking. I only like rotisserie cooked chicken so Birds and Zankou are about the only local places I eat chicken out. I love the picture of the new place you tried and great photo of the sheep. Have a wonderful day. Hugs, Dru

  3. WOW, Darylynn, those places are absolutely beautiful! I love the Clint Eastwood resort place, sounds like the perfect haven ;) I don't think I'd want to leave that table that sat near the Koi pond, either lol. So glad you had such a wonderful time. Love the pics of the cars in your previous post, too. They are all stunning, to say the least! ((hugs))

  4. Hi Darylynn;

    I'm drooling here looking at all those great restaurants. I did visit Mission Ranch Hotel and Restaurant when we went to Carmel. I would have loved to go to The Corkscrew Cafe. Sounds like one I would've liked. Have a lovely day ahead my friend. Hugs

  5. It all sound so nice Darylynn. We have not been up that way in years. If we don't get to do our NY trip, then maybe a drive up the CA coast will be what we do next. What kind of wine did you get? I like sweet wines but just a little since I am such a lightweight. We tasted some good ones in Hawaii.
    I am so glad the weather has gotten below 90! Your blog always lifts my spirits :)

  6. mmmm. yum. I'm a total pig, so hearing about the food side of things is always my favourite. I drive Bill made when we eat out, as no one is allowed to start until I've taken photos of everything!

    On a Saturday morning we have a new routine now. Girly girl has a swimming lesson, so she does that, Bill swims in the competition pool, then when lesson time is up, they go in the main pool with the wave machine. I sit and watch and read mags (girl & I swim on Thursday mornings - well, I don't swim as such, more walk around the pool in a Groucho Marx manner so I'm covered by the water & hidden up!), when swimming is over we go for breakfast. Which I am LOVING! I had eggs benedict the first week, last week I tried pancakes with bacon and syrup - so un British, and certainly an acquired taste - and this week I'm plotting the veggie fry up! For some reason, breakfast out feels like a luxurious treat, and each time I'm getting photos of our food! The manager laughed at me last week, when I took a pic of Bill's latter (it had a leaf pattern on the top), he said the table next to us had done the same.I nodded sagely and said 'food bloggers'.

    I'm waffling (ooh, I'll have to check menu - waffles!), so I shall bid you good day,and have a lovely weekend xx
