As you can see, there were 2.5 lbs of heirloom tomatoes, 1 lb of cherry tomatoes, 1 Eureka lemon, 4 nectarines, 1.5 lbs of flame seedless grapes, 1 lb plums, 1 cucumber, 1 bunch of beets and 2 heads leaf lettuce. Jeff asked what is an heirloom tomato and here's an answer from google: "An heirloom (called heritage in the UK) tomato is generally considered to be a variety that has been passed down,
through several generations of a family because of it's valued characteristics. Heirloom tomatoes lack a genetic mutation that gives tomatoes an appealing
uniform red color while sacrificing the fruit's sweet taste. Heirloom tomatoes can be found in a wide variety of colors, shapes,
flavors and sizes." So those orange, green and yellow tomatoes you see are not unripe, that's just their color. Remember when I wrote about not refrigerating your tomatoes a while back? We got those instruction from Farm Fresh to You as well. They say not to refrigerate these gas releasers: avocados, unripe bananas, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums and tomatoes. Gas releasers you should refrigerate are: apples, apricots, cantalopes, figs and honeydews. In addition, you should not store any of the following fruits and vegetables near any gas releasers: ripe bananas, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, eggplants, leafy greens, peas, peppers, squashes, sweet potatoes and watermelon. If you put spinach or my beloved kale in the same bin as peaches or apples, your greens will turn yellow and limp in just a couple of days. That would make a good science experiment for kids!
By the way, Costco has a new product called Sweet Kale Vegetable Salad Kit that we bought. It has kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and chicory. It comes with packages of dried cranberries and pumpkin seeds that you add and a poppyseed dressing to toss it all in. It contains 7 superfoods! It is quite good so I finally found a way to eat some kale.
While I'm on the subject of organic, I heard something on Dr. Oz that really made an impression on me. I usually don't buy organic if a fruit or vegetable has a skin you don't eat so, for example, I don't buy organic bananas. At Costco, organic strawberries are twice as expensive as regular strawberries but I think I'm going to be buying organic from now on. It was pointed out how a strawberry is like a sponge so even if you really wash them well, you may not be getting rid of all the pesticides.

ReplyDeleteHi Darylynn,
ReplyDeleteLove the veggies. They look great! That is good to know about strawberries since I have them everyday for breakfast or dessert. I just signed a petition against Trader Joe's their meat has made a lot of people sick and the petition is asking them to sell meat without drugs. I don't shop there but I have a lot of friends that do. Hope you enjoy your veggies. Hugs, Dru
That is so neat how they bring them to you and they look great, I hope they taste that way also. Have a nice day!! ((BIG HUGS))!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting that they delivered so late. Do you think it has something to do with keeping it fresh? Or another reason? HUGS
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful array! Yum! :)
ReplyDeleteI stopped buying "organic food" a while back, coz non-organic food is way too often sold directly to consumers as organic. If you have the space, the bes things it to grow your veggies and fruit.
*hugs*
Lotteries for certain hikes at Yosemite? Cool, maybe I should consider playing! Then I will have to come! ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Darylynn;
ReplyDeleteThe organic fruit & veggies look delicious! That's a great amount for $15.
I was offline all day because dangerous storms high winds and a tornado warning was predicted all day for NYS and surrounding states. Some areas were hit hard but all that carrying on all day and even the electric company called to warn me and tell me to prepare for outage and I only ended up hearing a far away boom, and 5 minutes of rain. The tornado warning was a bust too. I'm glad, but the humidity is sky high... More storms tomorrow. Hopefully that's a bust too.
Have a lovely day ahead and a wonderful weekend my friend. Hugs
The veggies look delicious.
ReplyDeleteHere I buy organic bananas because for some reason they are dirt cheap.
I got caught out tonight in a rip roaring thundering downpour while shopping for some bathroom goodies at Walmart.
I had gone out into the garden section and noted that the sky was inky black and then wham, down came a deluge.
I said to my friend that at least we were not on a trail like you were!
Waiting to hear how the haul tastes.
Hugs.
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately that's why I stopped: a few big and apparently trustworthy farms were uncovered selling non-organic food mixed with real organic food in a few European countries. :( They justified themselves saying it was just a misunderstanding.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the dumb question, but why you say that with dogs is difficult to have a veggie garden? I only had cats, but my relatives have many dogs each and still they have a huge veggie garden.
