Necessity is the Mother of Invention

Our dogs have it good!  One of the main reasons we decided to buy a Prius over other hybrid cars is that we realized that with the back seat down combined with the hatchback space, there would be plenty of room to take the dogs with us on short trips or even long vacations.  The only problem was that once we bought the car and came to love it, we worried about the dogs messing up the interior.  We bought a nice WeatherTech Cargo Mat but that only covered the hatchback area and it also didn't protect the sides of the interior which seemed like it could easily get dirty and scratched up.  So Jeff went to Home Depot and bought a large roll of a nice gray outdoor carpeting.  He cut it to fit the whole area with the seats down and it also goes up the sides and is held in place with existing anchors that the car has and some cut pieces of PVC.  It goes in and out easily so we will only put it down when the dogs are passengers.  We took them on a test drive and they settled in right away.  They like that they can be real close to us in the front seat.  Here's a blurry photo I took on their first ride along.

You can see what I mean about the carpeting going up the sides in this photo.  Maybe Jeff should take his invention on Shark Tank!

Jacob's first day of camp went well.  Ryan and I walked down the hill to pick him up at noon and we saw him before he saw us.  He looked a little forlorn but brightened up when he saw us.  The teachers and young camp counselors said he was a little shy but he didn't cry or anything.  As we walked up the the hill, the girls shouted good-bye to Jacob and said, "He is SO adorable!"  That he is!

  3. Hi Darylynn,
What a great idea Jeff had! Looks perfect to cover the hatchback area! Many years ago I had a cat who scratched my Mi9ndy so I got clear packing tape and taped the arms and sides of my couch it worked perfect. I then saw on that Harriet Carter catalogue they were selling strips of the clear tape for cats that scratch! That was many years later so my idea first! I hope Jacob will open up more in Camp. I think this is a really good thing for him. Hugs,Dru

  4. Fab idea and they seem to be quite the seasoned travellers from the photo, which one is Phileas Fogg and which Passepartout? Forlorn is such a brilliantly evocative world, poor Jacob's plight quite tugged at my heartstrings as I read it :( It sounds as though he was quietly enjoying the experience though :)

  5. Hi Darylynn,
Jeff came up with a great solution.
Poor Jacob, but hopefully things will pick up for him as he continues going. I hope he makes some good friends there.
I think we all can recall having that forlorn feeling as kids, I know I can.
My 13 year old granddaughter is over daily to help me do some chores. I used to give her cooking lessons and she asked today to start those up again. So I cant wait to do that with her and we will also begin playing chess together in the afternoons. This week she began walking outside with me. Today just a quarter of a block. Each day we will try for a bit farther. I must look a sight in my back brace and bone stimulator!
    Hugs

  6. That's a great idea! I'll have to pass it along to my sister. She has a Prius and a bigger dog that she takes for rides. There is dog hair on her front seat constantly.

  8. Very inventive! Mandy is smaller and doesn't make much of a mess so I'm not too concerned. She used to get car sick and so I had a blanket down but that's resolved, thankfully.
    Have a good day. ((Hugs))
