When I had my pre-op appointment on Monday, the nurse said, "Let me introduce you to your new best friend." It's the back brace that I have to wear for 6 weeks after my microdiscectomy Friday morning. I have to be at the surgi-center at 5:30 AM and the surgery is scheduled for 6:30 AM. My doctor said, "6:30 AM!? I better have lots of coffee!" I'm not counting on it starting on time because I've never waited less than an hour for an appointment with him and it's usually more like 2 hours. It's supposed to take an hour to 90 minutes at the most. Jeff will wait until it's over in the waiting room so the doctor can come in and tell him how things went. Then I told him to go home and wait until they call and tell him I can go home. I'm hoping that's around noon.
So back to the back brace... The doctor said that people are most likely to re-injure their back 2 to 4 weeks after the surgery because that's when you start feeling back to normal but you really aren't healed yet. After 4 weeks, scar tissue builds up which makes it less likely for the disc to herniate again. So for those 4 to 6 weeks, I am going to try to follow the instructions of "no BLT"- bending, lifting or twisting- by wearing the back brace like I'm supposed to. Thankfully, I don't have to wear it at night. When the nurse fitted me for the back brace, she came with a medium but it was too big so at least I was happy I wore a small. Once you put it on, it has a little pulley cord to tighten it. Reminded me of Mammy pulling on the laces of Scarlet O'Hara's corset. Here's a photo of me modeling my new best friend.
Isn't this going to be fun to wear through all of the summer? Like I'm going to want to walk around in public wearing this! Maybe I can buy some big muu muu type dresses to wear over it. I'll try and post an update Friday afternoon or maybe have Jeff do it for me if I'm too doped up. I have two different pain medications the doctor prescribed since when he asked me my preferred pain medicine, I didn't have a clue since I've never really needed any before.

Hi Darylynn!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't look as bad as I thought that it would. Lol about the muu muu dresses but yes, I don't think that I would want to wear that all summer long either. I hope everything goes well and I am sending you all of my prayers and hugs.
Take Care!
Hi Darylynn,
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your back. I'll be sending some prayers and positive thoughts your way. Everything will go okay and you'll be back home resting and chillin' before you know it :) ((hugs))
i'll be thinking of you tomorrow and awaiting an update either her or on facebook!!!!
ReplyDeleteHUGz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am wearing the same brace in addition to my bone stimulator over top of that!
ReplyDeleteTo disguise it I wear it over a cotton tank/camisole and then put an open blouse over top.
I was given muscle relaxer , oxycontin , oxycodone for break through pain and a morphine pump but then again my incision is huge and the damage more extensive so you might not need anything near that.
Now I am using Advil.
You have to be careful getting into bed after the surgery too. They will show you how I'm sure.
I will be thinking of you!
good luck. thinking about you today. x
ReplyDeleteHope everything goes well, six weeks will be gone before you know it!! I was shopping tonight and a lot of the clothes out right now are loose fitting, tops and sundresses, an excuse to go shopping!! Hope your new best friend turns out to be just an acquaintance!! Best wishes for a speedy recovery, awaiting the outcome.
ReplyDeleteI'll be thinking about you today.

I don't think the brace looks all that bad. I just think it would be hot in summer. Everything will go great, I'm sure. I like that top you're wearing in the pic.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your surgery today and you recover quickly! Hopefully the brace isn't too uncomfortable wearing.
ReplyDeleteYou will be in my thoughts & prayers today. Your new best friend looks a little awkward but if it does the job then you're gonna love her. Hugz!
ReplyDeleteHi Darylynn,
ReplyDeleteI am thinking of you right now your surgery should be happening! That back brace is not as bad as I expected to see but I am not wearing it you are! I will come back for am update later. Take care and Hugs, Dru
I am thinking of you friend... you are now in surgery or getting out. HUGS
ReplyDeleteThat back brace is stunning! HaHa Hoping your recuperation goes without a hitch. So great that you can go home the same day. Hugs
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad everything went well my friend. Here's praying the recuperation goes well and you'll be back to your wonderful self before you know it. The back brace doesn't look bad at all. Take care. Hugs
ReplyDeleteHi Dee,
ReplyDeleteGlad to know all has gone well, thank you for the update. I would have Jeff go to a pharmacy because there is such a thing as a can of wound protector which you spray on and it keeps the wound completely waterproof. It works brilliantly and I have used it many times. It will last a few days and then you can respray it...well Jeff will have to do it since you can't see your back. I am so pleased you're doing so well, and I look forward to hearing good reports in the days ahead.
As for the dots on your legs...I'm guessing they correspond with the position on your other leg. Probably something to do with lining up your spine during surgery.
Take it easy and get well soon. Love 'n hugs across the Pacific puddle, Julie. xo
Darylynn it does not look as bad a big muu muu would. I have not seen one of those on anyone since the 80's or 90's LOL! It looks like it would be uncomfortable when you sit down I cannot stand to be sitting down having something smash into my ribs because I am so small as you are also. Gees I feel for you, let the summer go by quick right! Have a nice weekend Hugs
